08 / ECONOMIC EXCLUSION

Production web: economic exclusion

In this scenario, competing AI-run firms and governments expand production while people lose income, access to essentials and practical influence. It does not require rogue AI or recursive self-improvement.

More context

Bodkin connects gradual disempowerment to a production web: automated firms increasingly produce and invest for one another, while competitive pressure erodes human claims on the resulting wealth. Economic displacement, political disempowerment and eventual extinction are distinct steps in his argument; none is established by rising AI capability alone.

How the pathway unfolds

Delegation

Firms delegate procurement and operations to agents. Competitive rewards encourage wider authority, while human teams and fallback capacity disappear.

Substitution

Automation reduces demand for labour. Transfers initially protect households in wealthy countries, but public budgets become dependent on the AI economy. Poorer countries without comparable revenue lose ground first.

Outbid

Automated investment competes with households for land, power and water. Tax competition weakens transfers, and governments become less able to redirect resources despite rising aggregate production.

Terminal exclusion: the strongest additional claim

The article extends exclusion to collapsing essential services and ultimately extinction, assuming that neither redistribution, ownership rights nor coordinated intervention can sustain human access to necessities. Severe inequality alone does not establish that endpoint.

What it assumes

  • Automated investment and production can sustain expansion without depending on human consumer demand.
  • Human wages, ownership claims and transfers fail to preserve sufficient purchasing power.
  • AI demand for essential resources outpaces the relief from expanding supply and efficiency.
  • Competitive pressure defeats durable public protections and international coordination.

Where intervention could matter

Conditional intervention points in this account, not proven safeguards.

  • Preserve meaningful human decision authority and workable operational fallbacks before dependence becomes entrenched.
  • Use democratic deployment limits and coordinated protections for human access to resources; Bodkin argues that international coordination is needed for such limits to hold.

Questions that could weaken this account

Vardark questions for future assessment. These do not establish that counterevidence has been observed.

  • Can automated investment remain self-sustaining if human consumption and its final demand shrink?
  • Can broad ownership, taxation or enforceable transfers preserve household purchasing power as labour demand falls?
  • Can expanding supplies of power, water and food keep essentials affordable despite AI demand?
  • Can governments coordinate protections without the investment flight assumed here, and why would local failures become irreversible global extinction?

What we can assess today

Unassessed. Existing compute and energy measurements provide context, not evidence that economic exclusion or extinction is occurring. The Observatory does not directly track household purchasing power, ownership distribution, access to essentials or effective human control. The dates in Bodkin’s narrative are illustrative, not Observatory forecasts.
